LJ's 1st Dental Cleaning

LJ went to the dentist when he was almost a year and a half with 6 teeth and 2 molars. The dentist said everything looked normal and I did not really need to bring him back until he had all his teeth and was old enough to sit still through a cleaning. Since LJ got teeth very late and they are fairly well spaced, this was the first time I brought him back for a cleaning (almost 2 years later!).

I told him weeks before our appointment that we would be going to see the dentist, that she would clean his teeth for him, and if he was well behaved he would get a surprise from a treasure chest after his cleaning. He repeated this to me nightly and seemed excited to go.  This was the best tool I have had yet for him to be cooperative and brush his teeth really well every night (he is wonderful some nights and fights it a little others!)!

On the morning of our appointment, Austin basically shut down due to icy conditions, but our appointment was not until 11:30 am, so it was not canceled. We were very ready to get out of the house by the time 11 am came!

LJ did awesome-and so did Evan! The hygienist was great at explaining everything she did before doing it, and LJ did everything she asked!

Evan sat on my lap quietly through most of the cleaning, and then got to pick out a toothbrush too! I decided not to bring Evan in until he is about 3 unless I have a concern before then, because (like LJ) he is a very late teether and the first appointment seemed a little silly to me.

Then dentist said overall LJ's teeth look very good. He has good spacing which is helpful to keep them clean. He has a narrow bite and may need a spacer when he is about 8 years old, depending on how his 6 year molars come in (we will not be able to tell until then). For now, he has 20 teeth and all the teeth we expect to see until his 6 year molars, which come about the same time he will probably start losing his baby teeth.

He had no cavities, but did have a small 'soft spot' on his back right upper molar, so we will need to watch that area (and cut out some of the fruit ropes that LJ loves so much!).

Dr. Balboa was great with him, and we will definitely be returning to her for his next cleaning!

And after the cleaning and meeting with the dentist, LJ got to pick out a surprise from the treasure chest as promised! They actually let him get one for Evan too! He got them each a parachuter!

Since we were out of the house, we ran by the mall for a quick errand. Unfortunately I only had a single stroller, but the boys were willing to share the seat for a while! Ha!

Thank goodness Sang was there too and helped me with them as I ran a few errands (had to pick up a dress for me and tux for Barrett). Thanks Aunt Sang!!

  1. Nice. Starting this early. Awesome! Your kids should avail of the right dental treatment as early as possible, to send them off to a fervent part of proper maintenance and hygiene, to stifle any problem or aberration which may accumulate and threaten afterwards, such as tooth outgrowth or scabrous cavities and gum damage.
